In high grade the 1849-D half eagle is comparable in rarity to the 1848-D half eagle. The obverse of this date half eagle is better struck than the reverse. Marked surfaces from circulation and mint-made planchet problems are the norm. The coloration ranges from green-gold to orange-gold on original, uncleaned specimens and the luster is usually frosty. There are a few examples that have above average eye appeal and they are sought after by many collectors of Dahlonega Gold Coins. There are less than 170 coins surviving with roughly 6% being Mint State.
