1842-D Large Date, Large Letters
Mintage: 21,691
The 1842-D large date, large letters is one of the rarest
half eagles struck at the Dahlonega Mint. Very rare in
grades of Extremely Fine or better. This date
has an average or better strike on both obverse and reverse.
The majority of the specimens of this date are very heavily
abraded and have very poor eye appeal. On the few original,
uncleaned examples that exist the luster is satiny and the
coloration is of a green-gold hue. A rare coin and sought
after by collectors of Dahlonega gold coins. Less than 120
specimens survive with no Mint State coins known.
